Dear Tax Payer,

As you are aware, Central Board of Excise & Customs (CBEC) has now made e-Payment of service tax mandatory for the assessee, who has paid Service Tax of rupees fifty lakh or above in the preceding financial year or has already paid Service Tax of rupees fifty lakh in the current financial year w.e.f. October 1,2006.

e-Payment of tax is a convenient and reliable mode of payment that saves you the trouble of physically going to a bank branch to pay the tax.  However, you might have some apprehensions as to how to go about paying the Service Tax electronically.  We have therefore briefly listed out the procedure involved.

Ø Ensure that you have the 15 digit PAN based assessee code issued by the service tax Department.

Ø Approach an authorized bank for an internet enabled account.

Ø You have to then log-on to the bank's Internet site after entering the user ID and password provided by the bank

at  the time of opting for e-payment.

Ø Opt for Central Excise/Service Tax Payment

Ø Fill the on-line Challan available in the Internet banking screen.

Ø    Most of the fields of the challan are pre populated.

Ø Select the appropriate tax types from the pop up menu and enter the tax amount corresponding to each tax type.

Ø The total payment to be effected appears for review.

Ø Submit the challan form and opt for making payment.

Ø Enter the User Id and Password to enter into the secured e-baning area.

Ø Select an account for debiting the total tax amount.

Ø Authorise the payment.

Ø Cyber receipt can be printed instantly.

Ø Two copies of stamped and receipted challans are delivered at your mailing address of the taxpayer.

e-Payment of Service Tax solutions of the banks are highly secure and conform to the RBI norms.  Further in this system the money can be transferred only to CBEC and not to anyone else.  The question of blocking of any payment also does not arise.
