              Sub.: Service Tax - Introduction of the levy of Service tax

                             on certain new services - Creation of awareness

                             among the service providers - Regarding.

          The Finance Bill, 2001 proposes to introduce the levy of service tax on certain new services w.e.f. 01.07.2001.  The broad features of this new levy were communicated in this office Service Tax Trade Notice No.03/2001 dated 01.03.2001.

          The jurisdiction of the Chennai III Commissionerate covers the distrcicts of Chenglepat, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Kancheepuram and Dharmapuri.  Any service provider within the above jurisdiction have to register themselves (after coming into force of the levy) before the Assistant/Deputy Commissioners of this commissionerate.    For this purpose they have to approach the respective divisional Service Tax Cells, at the addresses given below.

          It is hereby informed that in case of any doubts as to the nature and coverage of the levy, interpretation of the statutory provisions, procedures to be followed, etc. the following offices may be contacted.
